Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The practice of physical activity results in benefits in the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) clinical evolution. Implementation intentions seem to be an effective self-regulatory strategy in the promotion of pro-health behaviors, such as active life and physical exercise. This project’s main objective is to promote adherence to physical activity, in patients with COPD, through the implementation intentions. The proposed sample consist about 100 subjects over 65 years old with clinically stable COPD, and in clinic ambulatory, that will go for daily walks of 30 minutes during 9 weeks (plus 24 weeks of follow-up). The group sample will be divided in two. Only one of the groups will be accompanied with the implementation intentions, regarding "where, when and how" they will do their walks. This behavior will be evaluated in a Hospital of Metropolitan Lisbon, through medical exams, questionnaires (Planned Behavior Theory and previous physical activity) and a pedometer. The expectations are that benefits will be observed on the evolution of DPOC in all subjects, with a bigger participation in the daily walks from those that were subject to intention implementation.
