Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: One of the main concerns for parents of preschool children is sleep problems (Scher, 2002; Christophersen & VanScoyoc, 2013; Loutzenhise, Hoffman & Beatch, 2014). In the portuguese population, about 10% of mothers acknowledge the presence of such problems (Silva, Silva, Braga & Neto, 2013a). Based upon Bowlby (1956, 1981, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993) and Ainsworth's (1968, 1969, 1978, 1979) attachment theory, namely the concepts of separation anxiety, susceptibility to fear and internal working models, we try to understand the relationships between the quality of attachment representations and sleep. When applying the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (Silva, Silva, Neto & Braga, 2011) and the Attachment Story Completion Task (Maia, Veríssimo, Ferreira, Silva & Fernandes, 2009) to 58 children aged between 4 and 5, a statistically significant inverse relation was found between attachment representations and sleep. A similar relation was also found between sleep problems and the narratives of separation and reunion as well as between the narratives of separation and the resistance towards going to bed and sleep-related anxiety. Maternal perception of the prevalence of sleep problems was shown to be positively related to the narrative of reunion. This is the first portuguese study to cover this matter. We think it contributes towards a critical standpoint of this topic as it takes into account the quality of attachment representations in relation to the separation from the physical and relational world that sleep entails, supporting the underlying theory and establishing clear implications for clinical intervention
