antecede a cirurgia.
ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims at developing a comparative study concerning psychological preparation of children for a scheduled ENT operation. This study uses a sample of 60 children, ages 5 - 9. Of these 60 children, 30 were submitted to a preoperative psychological preparation through the viewing of a video that explains all the procedures related to hospitalization and surgery. The other 30 didn´t have access to any type of preparation. The assessment instruments used in this study were the following: a socio-demographic questionnaire for mothers; the Fear Thermometer (FT); and the Pain Scale designed to the children. Results show that children who were prepared for surgery had lower levels of fear and pain, when compared to children with no preparation. The difference between both groups is even more significant in what concerns children´s preoperative levels of fear, clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of this preparation program for surgery.
