ABSTRACT: Currently, juvenile delinquency is an increasing phenomenon with a direct impact in our society. These teenagers find in crime and violence an escape from a history of life carved by the psychic suffering and traumatic experiences, namely at the family level. Many studies concentrate themselves on masculine juvenile delinquency, but is it possible that delinquent girls look the same way at crime and violence, characteristics of their delinquent behaviour? How do boys and girls face their experience during their detention inside youth detention centers? Is that a change with future perspectives? Opting for a qualitative approach and with a semi-structured guide as base, we interviewed 18 boys and girls with ages ranging from 14 to 18 years, detained in a youth detention center. Aiming to understand if there are differences in their subjective perceptions about the considered subjects, we gave voice to protagonists of both genders. The 18 transcribed interviews compose the corpus for the content analysis. On the crime topic, girls focused on the causes of criminal behaviour and boys clearly state that the main objective is the acquisition of material goods, even if they have to use violence. Both genders refer to change experienced during detention, although girls are more connected to school and effective change than boys. We conclude that there are differences between genders regarding experience with juvenile delinquency that should be considered on intervention plans.
