Abstract(s)
The present investigation aims to study the impact that Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) has on a set of psychological variables - Self-Esteem, Psychological Flourishing and Locus of Control. The sample consists of 290 participants recruited through an online questionnaire, 167 of whom are women (57.6%), and the remaining 123 are men (42,4%), aged between 16 and 69 years old (M = 33.7, SD = 10.9). The sample itself is well distributed at the level of participants who reported having had and never having had any contact with NLP (45.2% and 54.8%, respectively). To assess the variables under study, we applied the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), translated, and adapted to the Portuguese population by Pechorro et al. (2011), the Psychological Flourishing Scale (PERMA Profiler), validated to the Portuguese population by Caracol (2015), and the Battery of Scales of Generalized Expectations of Control (BEEGC–20) adapted to the Portuguese population by Silva (2010). A “NLP Knowledge” variable was also assessed and operationalized through a 10 item multiple-choice instrument, built for this investigation, and which allowed the assessment of the participant’s real knowledge regarding the assumptions, theory and practice of the NLP tool. The results show a positive impact of the contact and knowledge in NLP on Self-Esteem, some dimensions of Psychological Flourishing, as well as some dimensions of the Locus of Control Variable. The practical implications of the results will be presented and discussed throughout the present study.
