Abstract(s)
A adoção e a Procriação Medicamente
As pessoas
ABSTRACT: In recent decades, the increase in studies on transgender and/or non-binary individuals has not only followed the development and access to gender affirmation processes but has also highlighted the existence of parental aspirations within these groups. In the Portuguese context, research on transgender and/or non-binary parenthood is still emerging, as this study seeks to understand the desires, intentions, and parental expectations of transgender and non-binary individuals in Portugal. With a qualitative approach and theoretical framework based on the Life Course Theory, thirteen individuals were interviewed, nine self-identified as transgender and four as non-binary, with ages ranging from 20 to 34 years and diverse sexual orientations. The qualitative analysis of the interview transcripts was conducted through Reflexive Thematic Analysis. It was found that most of the interviewees expressed a desire to become parents in the future, while three were undecided about starting a family with children. The analysis revealed that most of the interviewees expressed a desire to become parents in the future, while three were undecided about forming families with children. Adoption and Medically Assisted Procreation were the preferred methods for realizing parenthood, as an alternative to traditional cis-heteronormative biological reproduction. These choices were based on the perception of challenges and anticipation of social support for parenthood. The participants acknowledged the potential consequences of gender affirmation procedures on fertility and reported mixed experiences regarding the information and support received about medically assisted procreation and fertility preservation. Although this option was considered and reflected upon by three individuals. The results of this research deepened our understanding of the parental intentions and expectations of trans individuals, as well as the intersection of parental aspirations with gender affirmation journeys, suggesting recommendations for future research and contributing to the development of more affirming interventions for this population.
