conhecimento real do fenómeno. Adicionalmente, a Alienção Parental foi percecionada como
uma forma de violência.
Parental Alienation has been widely recognized as a phenomenon with significant consequences for the mental health of children and rejected parents. It has been considered a controversial term, despite increasing research on the phenomenon, due to a lack of consensus of definition and measures to identify it. In this sense, the present study aimed to evaluate professionals’self-perception regarding their degree of familiarity with the concept of Parental Alienation and to verify whether the professionals self-perceived familiarity corresponds to actual knowledge of the phenomenon and the believes regarding the impact of Parental Alienation. Furthermore, it aimed to verify how the perceptions and knowledge described varies depending on sociodemographic characteristics, including gender and years of professional experience working with children and young people in vulnerable situations. The sample consisted of 188 participants aged between 26 and 67 years, and data collection was based on a questionnaire about Parental Alienation. The results indicated that most participants considered themselves familiar with the concept. However, there were no significant differences in actual knowledge of the phenomenon between those who reported being familiar with it and those who did not. Moreover, Parental Alienation was predominantly perceived as a form of violence.
