Abstract(s)
Os comportamentos autolesivos nos adolescentes são um fenómeno crescente. Contudo, apesar da
necessidade de intervenção nesses casos, a maior parte dos adolescentes com estes comportamentos
raramente pede ajuda. Desta forma, o presente estudo visa explorar as narrativas das experiências
subjetivas dos adolescentes em relação aos seus comportamentos autolesivos, identificando os fatores
emocionais, sociais e contextuais que contribuem para a prática desses comportamentos e, em
simultâneo, investigar as barreiras e facilitadores percebidos pelos adolescentes para procurar ajuda.
Para tal, foi construído um guião para uma entrevista semidiretiva aplicada a 10 adolescentes, com
idades entre os 13 e os 19 anos, recrutados no meio clínico que praticaram comportamentos
autolesivos pelo menos uma vez na vida. As entrevistas foram sujeitas a uma análise de conteúdo.
Em termos gerais, a análise das narrativas revelou sobretudo uma grande influência do estigma, tanto
social como interno, enquanto uma barreira significativa ao pedido de ajuda. Outros fatores,
nomeadamente o ambiente familiar e o contacto com profissionais de saúde influenciam igualmente
a abertura dos adolescentes para procurar ajuda. Os resultados, bem como as narrativas, indicam que
a promoção da literacia em saúde mental, especialmente em ambientes escolares, pode desempenhar
um papel essencial na desconstrução de mitos e preconceitos relativamente aos comportamentos
autolesivos, o que pode facilitar e impulsionar os adolescentes a pedir ajuda quando esta é necessária.
ABSTRACT: Self-injurious behaviours in adolescents are an increasing phenomenon. However, despite the need for intervention in these cases, most adolescents with these behaviours rarely seek help. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the narratives of adolescents’ subjective experiences related to their self-injurious behaviours, identifying the emotional, social, and contextual factors that contribute to the practice of these behaviours, while also investigating the barriers and facilitators perceived by adolescents in seeking help. To achieve this, a semi-structured interview guide was developed and applied to 10 adolescents, aged between 13 and 19 years, recruited from a clinical setting, who had engaged in self-injurious behaviours at least once in their lives. The interviews were subjected to content analysis. In general, the analysis of the narratives revealed a significant influence of stigma, both social and internal, as a major barrier to seeking help. Other factors, including the family environment and contact with healthcare professionals, also influence the adolescents' openness to seeking help. The results, along with the narratives, suggest that the promotion of mental health literacy, particularly in school environments, can play a key role in deconstructing myths and prejudices regarding self-injurious behaviours, which could facilitate and encourage adolescents to seek help when needed.
