Abstract(s)
The main objective of this dissertation was to contribute to the study of the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Portuguese population, namely in the Firefighters population. There are several studies that reflect a great concern about the impact of this pandemic on the mental health of the general population, physicians, nurses, and health assistants. However, in Portugal, there is a lack of studies that reflect the psychological impact of this pandemic on those who in a professional or voluntary way reach the population (ie, Firefighters), providing pre-hospital care that often does not allow the recommended distance. To a total of 234 participants (102 Firefighters), three instruments were applied that aimed to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of Firefighters, compared to the general population. The results of this study indicated that, globally, the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic manifested itself more significantly in participants from the general population than in the Fire Department. Regarding the sample of Firefighters, there were significant differences in terms of the psychological impact of COVID-19 between those who had performed their functions for less than 10 years and those who had performed it for more than 10 years, the former being most affected by the pandemic. Additionally, female fire brigade participants were significantly more psychologically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic than male participants.
