Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Over the years, we have seen an increase in the number of studies and publications on the dimension of spirituality and its relationship to health and well-being. This is why we propose to study the relationship between spirituality with self-care with diabetes and physical and mental health of the chronically ill, taking into account that are the beliefs of each user that influence their adherence. The objective of this study involves verify the relationship between the spiritual well-being with the self-care with diabetes and physical and mental health in a sample of type II diabetics. The instruments used were the Assessment Questionnaire of Self-care activities with Diabetes, the Health Assessment Questionnaire MOS SF-36 and the Spiritual Well-Being Assessment Questionnaire. The sample consisted of 72 participants, aged between 45 and 80 years (M = 60.82, SD = 9.28), in which 42 (58.3%) are female. The results of this study indicate that the dimensions of evaluation of spiritual well-being (in both scales - ideal state and current state) are related to better mental health (in particular the dimensions mental health and vitality) and greater adherence to some self-care behaviors with diabetes (specifically, general nutrition, medication and monitoring of blood glucose). It is considered that this study is an added value in health care, the level of understanding of the factors that may be related to better adherence. In addition, future studies should analyze and understand the influence of spiritual well-being of these disease control behaviors in order to determine whether indeed the spiritual well-being influence greater control of the disease by the users and hence improving the level of physical and mental health.
