Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The psychological effects of the Portuguese colonial war have been subject of ongoing research in the field of psychology. However, few studies have considered the impact of this event on families, focusing instead, mainly, on the individual and on psychopathological development as a consequence of the experience of war. Building on the increasing research that elaborates on the outcomes and implications of macrosystemic challenges such as war on human systems, this study seeks to understand how families of colonial war veterans co-construct narratives of their experiences. Eight Portuguese families (n = 23) were interviewed using a semi-structured script. The resulting data was subjected to a thematic analysis, where two main themes arose: war experience and family communication metaperception. These results have shown that the experience of the war is multileveled, showing palliative and disruptive aspects at the individual, the family, and the contextual level, in an interconnected network of influence. Moreover, the results suggest that the subject of war is silenced within the family while, simultaneously, being psychologically present through wartime objects and non-explicit communication. These results are further discussed in light of research into the transgenerational transmission of trauma.
