Abstract(s)
(2020) e da Sexual and Reproductive Empowerment Scale for Adolescents and Young Adults
de Upadhya et al. (2020) e a uma versão reduzida do The Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire, de
Brooks-Gunn e Ruble (1980).
A idade, a escolaridade e o método contracetivo utilizado
The menstrual cycle and fertility awareness methods are still very little discussed topics in both social and academic circles and there is very little theory that shows its impact on psychological variables. Given this scarcity in the literature, particularly notorious in Portugal, this study sought to contribute by exploring the impact of the knowledge about the cycle and the learning of a fertility awareness method on sexual and reproductive empowerment, on the embodiment experience and on the menstrual attitude of menstruators, three variables relevant to their quality of life and well-being. Additionally, the main effect and the moderating role of age, education and the contraceptive method used in the three variables under study were explored. The study involved the participation of 277 menstruating people aged between 18 and 54 years, the vast majority of whom were women (99.6%). Were used portuguese versions of the Experience of Embodiment Scale by Piran et al. (2020) and the Sexual and Reproductive Empowerment Scale for Adolescents and Young Adults by Upadhyay et al. (2020) and a shortened version of The Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire by Brooks-Gunn and Ruble (1980). The results confirm that both knowledge of the menstrual cycle and learning a fertility awareness method have a positive impact on sexual and reproductive empowerment, on the experience of embodiment and on some factors of the menstrual attitude of menstruators. Age, education and the contraceptive method used also have an impact on these variables, with some moderation. Results that demonstrate the importance of addressing the theme of the menstrual cycle and fertility awareness methods in schools.
