Abstract(s)
adolescente (Berndt, 1996). O objectivo deste estudo é verificar qual a relação existente
ABSTRACT: There are several studies that point to the influence of the quality of the attachment to parents, on the future peer relationships (e.g., Costa & Matos, 2006). Adolescents with a secure base relationship with parents, are more capable and competent in maintaining their friendships with peers (Rubin, Dwyer, Kim & Burgess, 2004). In turn, the friendship quality is positively associated to indices of adjustment and psychosocial functioning, competencies that influence adolescence development (Berndt, 1996). The aim of this study is to check what is the relationship between the quality of the attachment to parents and the quality of friendship with peers, and if there are differences between boys and girls. The sample consisted in 736 adolescents (356 females and 380 males) of the 7 th grade, with ages between 10 and 14 years, who were asked to fill Security Scale – in order to understand the relationship between adolescents and attachment figures – and the Friendship Quality Questionnaire – in order to analyze the perceptions of young people about the qualitative criteria of their friendship with best friends. The results confirm the positive relationship between the type of attachment to parents and the quality of friendship with the best friend. There are differences in the friendship quality, between boys and girls.
