Abstract(s)
e, paradoxalmente, a menos estudada.
A normalização e impunidade
ABSTRACT: Street harassment is one of the most prevalent forms of violence against women and, paradoxically, the least studied. Given the gaps in the literature, this study aims to understand and contextualise the phenomenon of street harassment, the significance of these experiences in women's lives, the impact on their quality of life and the justice system's answers to this type of violence. Two sessions were conducted through semi-structured interviews in focus groups, with each session comprising six participants. As this was a qualitative study with an exploratory design, the data was examined through the lens of content analysis. The findings indicate that street harassment is embedded within a multifaceted system that perpetuates violence through social control and the conditioning of women's freedom. Harassment can be defined as a demonstration of power and an intimidation strategy that increases the sense of insecurity experienced by women on the streets and acts as a deterrent to their use of public spaces. The normalisation and impunity of this behaviour serve to exacerbate psychological distress and contribute to the development of psychopathological problems, including isolation, eating disorders and mood disorders. To combat this phenomenon, it is essential to implement a multifaceted approach that encompasses both formal and informal justice, with strategies such as bystander intervention and the investment in prevention education.
