Abstract(s)
As
presente estudo.
ABSTRACT: Although sexuality is an integral part of human life and is tied to physical and psychological health, certain fantasies and activities, specifically BDSM/Kinky, have been subject to stigmatization and pathologization over the years. Therefore, the current study aims to characterize the possible association between BDSM/Kinky fantasies and activities, depression, anxiety, and self-esteem, while contributing to the understanding and depathologization of these sexualities. Participants (N=706), aged between 18 and 79 years (M=31.53), responded to the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Inventário de Fantasias e Atividades Kinky e BDSM (IFAKBDSM), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the General Anxiety Disorder-7. The results indicate a high percentage of BDSM/Kinky fantasies and activities in the Portuguese population, with submission, domination, masochism and fetishism being the most common. The results show that submission and masochism fantasies and activities are associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression, domination fantasies are associated with higher levels of depression, and sadism activities are associated with lower levels of anxiety. On the other hand, submission and exhibitionism fantasies and activities are associated with higher levels of self-esteem. Implications for clinical practice, limitations, and future research will also be discussed in this study.
