Abstract(s)

Playback Theatre (PT) is a participatory theatrical practice that enables the sharing and reframing of personal stories, fostering empathy, mutual support, and the strengthening of identities. This dissertation explores the impact of PT in promoting resilience and empowerment among LGBTQIA+ individuals, within the context of the Dar Palco à Diferença project. This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with six LGBTQIA+ performers who were part of PT groups formed during this initiative. Thematic analysis, based on Braun and Clarke’s (2006) reflective approach, revealed that PT provides a safe and affirmative space that enhances self-esteem, fosters supportive networks, and validates identities. The findings highlight that continued participation in PT helps to mitigate the effects of minority stress, promotes positive coping strategies, and reinforces a sense of community belonging. The study also emphasizes the need for sustained interventions integrated into structured programs for mental health promotion and human rights advocacy, particularly in challenging sociopolitical contexts. PT thus emerges as a valuable tool for psychosocial intervention within the LGBTQIA+ community.
