Abstract(s)
The military and family contexts are extremely demanding physically and emotionally for the military. However, the most important relationships are established within the family, reflecting the concern that military personnel have for their families in addition to their military career. Due to the difficulty in reconciling family life and work, there is a two-way conflict. This conflict arises due to the high demands of availability, mobility and the risk these professionals are exposed to such as injury or death. This conflict can be aggravated in single-parent military families or with both members of the military couple. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the military career results in the existence of conflict in family, marital and professional relationships. The participants were 102 military personnel, 98 from the Portuguese army and 4 from the air force. The collection method was mixed (quantitative and qualitative), in questionnaire mode. This questionnaire was composed of the Scale of Satisfaction Assessment in Areas of Marital Life (EASAVIC), the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (EAD-R), the Scale of Work-Family Conflict (CTF-R) and Family-Work Conflict (CFT-R), the Scale of the feeling of work-family guilt (SCTF-R) and the Scale of family-work guilt (SCFT-R) as well as open questions. Data collection was face-to-face and online. There were no significant changes in marital relations and work-family conflict, except when there are children in the couple. Couples without children have higher levels of satisfaction in marital relationships and less work-family and family-work conflict compared to couples with children.
