Abstract(s)
Conclusão: Os resultados sugerem a
emocional.
ABSTRACT: Introduction: Mental health is an intrinsic and essential aspect of people's lives, as it influences how they think, feel and behave. Personality and emotional regulation are factors that influence mental health, affecting areas of personal, professional and family life. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality traits and emotional regulation goals in the mental health of adults, analyzing sociodemographic factors. Method: A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Big Five personality inventory, the emotional regulation goals scale and the mental health inventory were administered to a convenience sample of 300 adults. Results: Positive correlations were found between mental health and openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, performance goals, prohedonic and pro-social goals and negative correlations between mental health and neuroticism and counter-hedonic goals. In addition, the interaction between the trait of openness to experience and pro-hedonic goals proved to be a significant factor associated with the mental health of adults, while the interaction between the trait of neuroticism and counter-hedonic goals proved to be a negative factor associated with levels of mental health. Conclusion: The results suggest how higher levels of certain personality traits, in conjunction with adaptive emotion regulation goals, may affect the mental health levels of a sample of the adult population in Portugal. The results suggest that future research should examine whether other personality dimensions may also be associated with emotion regulation goals.
