Psychological well-being is a multifaceted concept influenced by multiple dimensions, among which hedonic and eudaimonic orientations stand out. These orientations reflect different ways of structuring experience and seeking well-being, either through immediate satisfaction and pleasure (hedonia) or through the pursuit of personal growth and meaning in life (eudaimonia). Although widely studied internationally, the relationships between these orientations, life purpose, and psychological flourishing remain under-explored in Portugal, justifying the relevance of this study. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between hedonic and eudaimonic orientations and psychological flourishing, testing the mediating role of life purpose. One hundred and fourteen Portuguese adults participated, responding to a questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic measures and the Portuguese versions of the HEEMA (hedonic and eudaimonic orientations), the BEP (life purpose) and the MHC–SF (psychological flourishing). The results indicated that only eudaimonic orientation made a significant contribution to psychological flourishing, mediated entirely by life purpose. Hedonic orientation, although positively associated with flourishing, did not reveal significant mediating effects. These findings reinforce the importance of life purpose as an explanatory mechanism linking eudaimonic motivations to lasting well-being. The results are discussed considering contemporary literature on flourishing and suggest relevant implications for psychological interventions focused on the development of meaning and personal fulfilment.
