Abstract(s)
The consumption of substances or drugs among university students is considered a significant issue, as this consumption can negatively impact both physical and psychological health, as well as academic success. The present study seeks to test the role of the risk perception variable associated with substance use as a mediating variable in the relationship between alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use and the related consequences among a sample of university students attending higher education in Portugal. The sample of this study consisted of 124 students enrolled in courses at diferente Portuguese universities. Data were collected through an online self-administered questionnaire designed to assess alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use, risk perception, and the consequences associated with such use. The results indicate that risk perception is negatively associated with the consumption of all considered substances. The consumption levels of the substances were shown to be positively related to each other. Additionally, the results suggest that risk perception is positively associated with the perception of positive consequences related to consumption. Regarding the role of risk perception as a mediating variable, it was found that risk perception mediates the relationship between alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis consumption and positive consequences. In summary, the present study contributes to understanding the relationships involved in university students' decisions to use substances, emphasizing the need to consider the role that risk perception may play in the relationship between substance use and its consequences. Overall, the conclusions of this study should be considered in the development of prevention strategies and intervention programs focused on changing university students' risk perception regarding the consumption of certain substances or drugs, aiming to reduce this consumption and mitigate the impact of adverse consequences related to use within this population.
