Tobacco is the second most consumed psychoactive substance in Portugal. In men, tobacco is considered a dose-dependent risk factor for erectile dysfunction. The literature mostly shows that tobacco is not a risk factor to female sexual dysfuncion. The present study analyzed the relationships between smoking habits and female and male sexual functioning in a sample of young mean age (27 years and 30 years, respectively). The sample consisted of 119 men and 377 women divided into non- smokers, occasional smokers and regular smokers. The instruments used to evaluate female sexual functioning were the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Female Sexual Distress Scale - Revised (FSDS-R), and for male sexual functioning the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and the Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT). Nicotine dependence was assessed by the Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence. In the female, regular smokers did not differ from non-smokers. Occasional smokers had worse sexual functioning than regular smokers. Nicotine dependence did not correlate with female sexual functioning. In males the regular smokers had worse sexual functioning than the other two groups. Nicotine dependence correlated with greater sexual dissatisfaction. These associations were maintained after controlling age as a covariate. The results are congruent with the notion that smoking is a dose-dependent risk factor for male sexual difficulties but appears to have much lower risks for female sexual difficulties.
