Abstract(s)
Gomes (2016).
ABSTRACT: The present study aims to investigate the effect of anxiety trait on the perception of sports performance. Additionally, it was proposed to examine the moderating effect of group cohesion on the negative relationship between anxiety trait and the perception of sports performance. The study included 83 female participants, 112 male participants, and 1 who preferred not to specify their gender, ranging in age from 13 to 50 years. To assess the variables under study, the Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2) by Smith and colleagues (2006), the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) by Mendes and colleagues (1993), and the Questionnaire of Perception of Sports Performance (QPSP) by Gomes (2016) were used. Correlation analysis revealed that anxiety trait has a negative impact on athletes' perception of sports performance, group cohesion does not reduce perceived anxiety, and there is a positive association between group cohesion and the perception of sports performance. Regarding moderation analyses, in groups with high cohesion, somatic anxiety promotes an increase in the perception of sports performance, while both total anxiety and the worry dimension lead to a decrease in the same. The results obtained highlight the importance of distinguishing everyday concepts that directly affect the athlete's well-being and their perception of sports performance, such as distinguishing anxiety from excitement. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for research focused on the importance of working with group dynamics considering the various situations that athletes encounter in their daily lives.
