Abstract(s)
atitudes.
ABSTRACT: Given the strong presence of Prison Guards within Prison Establishments, they hold a significant role in the rehabilitation process of inmates. Thus, it is essential to understand the variables that influence how these professionals interact with inmates. One of the most studied variables is attitudes. This study explores the attitudes of Prison Guards towards inmates, with the main objective of understanding if there are significant differences in these attitudes considering the sex of the individual who committed a delinquent act, and also considering the age, sex, years of service, and educational level of the Guards. The goal is to understand the type of attitudes developed by them regarding rehabilitation and, consequently, towards male and female inmates. To this end, the “Escala de Atitudes em Relação a Delinquentes” (EARD) was used, as well as a version of the same scale where the items were rewritten in the feminine form, to compare the attitudes of Guards according to the sex of the delinquent. 132 Prison Guards were surveyed, however, only 102 questionnaires were considered valid due to the lack of responses to the second questionnaire by some participants. The results found showed that both male and female Guards demonstrated more positive attitudes towards female delinquents; older Guards demonstrated more positive attitudes than younger Guards, and these were also more positive towards female delinquents; and Guards with more years of service also demonstrated more positive attitudes than Guards with fewer years of service. These results reinforce the importance of promoting continuous training to ensure equitable and impartial attitudes of Prison Guards towards inmates.
