Abstract(s)
Mindfulness or “atenção plena” in Portuguese, means to be attentive to the present moment, paying attention in a particular fashion, with mindful awareness and free from judgement. This study aims at providing additional empirical evidence on the impact of Openness to Experience – one of the dimensions of personality - on the Practice of Meditation, and on whether that relationship is moderated by the Mindfulness ability. With that purpose in mind, the following hypotheses were formulated: (1) Openness to Experience holds a significant and positive association with the practice of Meditation; (2) Mindfulness has a moderating effect in the relationship between the Openness to Experience and the Practice of Meditation. This study included 261 participants, involved in a number of organisations based both in national and international territory. Among the participants, there were people who practised some kind of meditation, including Mindfulness meditation, and those who didn’t practise any kind of meditation. Our findings showed that the Openness to Experience has a positive impact on the Practice of Meditation. The moderating effect of Mindfulness in the relationship between the Openness to Experience and the Practice of Meditation hasn’t been proven. Furthermore, it has been found that the participants in this study with greater Openness to Experience show greater concern about present time events. The practice of Mindfulness meditation can be a useful auxiliary tool in improving general quality of life, with a series of benefits in all areas of the practitioner’s life, including work.
