Abstract(s)
Previous studies concluded that despite improvements, the profession of educational assistant remains devalued, although these professionals are essential in the school community (Carreira, 2007). The general objective of this study is to know the educational assistants representations related to their activity, with the specific objective off measuring factors that could influence these representations, that is to say, variables that can interfere with their interpretation of the profession. At the beginning of the present study, a literature review was carried which covered the themes of social representations, the educational assistant profession and the studies previously conducted. In the development of the research there was an empirical section composed by participant’s introduction and the identification of the applied methodology. A mixed methodology was applied consisting of quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (testimonials) methods and descriptive study with a correlational component. The results evidenced that educational assistants representations are positive, however they consider that others image about their activity does not show the appreciation that they would like to see. It was verified that the selected variables do not influence the educational assistant’s representations. A correlation was found between “professional recognition” and the “degree of job satisfaction”, concluding that higher the recognition of the profession, greater is the satisfaction of these professionals in the performance of their duties.
