Abstract(s)
The aim of this study was to evaluate paternal involvement in fathers of children with cerebral palsy, as well as their experienced levels of stress and self-efficacy. The results were then compared to a group of parents of normally developing children. The sample comprised 29 fathers of children with cerebral palsy with ages ranging from 24 to 52 years (M=38.03) and 31 fathers of normally developing children with ages ranging from 29 to 53 years (M=39.35). To collect the data, a demographic questionnaire was used, as well as scales measuring paternal involvement, parental stress and parental self-efficacy. The results indicated that fathers of children with cerebral palsy are more involved in the dimensions Care and Presence when comparing to the group of fathers of normally developing children. Fathers who perceive their child’s motor impairment to be slight or moderate report themselves as more available for the child and as engaging in disciplining attitutes more often than parents who perceive their child’s impairment as severe. A moderate positive association was also found between parental self-efficacy and paternal involvement, indicating that, the more confident and effective fathers feel in their parenting role, the more they get involved with their children.
