Abstract(s)
Eu e Cut-off Emocional) e a diferenciação do self das filhas. Estes resultados destacam a
ABSTRACT: The differentiation of self is assumed to be a central concept of Bowen's Family Systems Theory. Being a fundamental dimension of the individuals emotional and relational functioning, it is related to the ability to reach emotional maturity. Although there are studies that support Bowen's theoretical propositions that parents' functioning patterns influence those of their children and that these patterns are transmitted to the next generation, research that studies the transmission of differentiation of the self from one generation to the next is meager and inconsistent. Thus, the present study aims to explore the validity of Bowen's assumption, that the transgenerational transmission of differentiation of self in women, more specifically, to explore the possible influence that mothers' differentiation of self dimensions have on daughters' differentiation of self dimensions. The sample consisted of 60 dyads of mothers and daughters over the age of 18. The online questionnaire consisted of a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Brief Differentiation of Self Inventory (DSI-SF). The results provide partial support for Bowen theory's assumption of the transgenerationality of differentiation of self, demonstrating an association between three of the four dimensions of mothers' differentiation of self (Emotional Reactivity, I-Position and Emotional Cut-off) and daughters' differentiation of self. These results highlight the importance of taking in consideration the complex relationship between levels of differentiation of the self, the family system, and the transgenerational context of the family of origin when analyzing the functioning of individuals and in developing better clinical intervention.
