Abstract(s)
The aim of this study is to investigate whether the duration of a crisis interferes with the causal locus, that is, with the definition of the agent responsible for the outcome of that same crisis. In this study, the causal locus was considered dichotomically (Internal versus External) and through a scale of attribution of responsibility to the protagonist of the situation. Four situations were conceived that made the variable “Duration of the crisis” alternate between “Long Duration” and “Short Duration” and the variable “Control” which alternated between “With Control” and “No Control”. These four situations were manipulated into four different “Life Themes” (Health, Finance, Family and Self-fulfillment). A within-subjects design (single-subject design) was chosen, as the 274 participants reflected counterfactually on the four proposed experimental situations. The results point to the inexistence of impact of the variable “Duration of the crisis” on the causal locus and on the degree of responsibility attributed to the protagonist. However, in a divergent way, it was found that the variable “Control” has an impact on the causal locus and on the level of responsibility attributed and also that this impact is moderated by the “Theme of Life” in question.
