Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The present study investigates the influence of the course attended, year of study, and gender on perceptions of offenders and their rehabilitation. The sample includes 418 participants selected by convenience, the majority of whom are female, from the Law course and enrolled in the first year. Initially, sociodemographic questions were asked, and subsequently, the "Perceptions of Penal Sanctions Questionnaire" (Castro-Rodrigues & Gonçalves, 2016) was administered. The perceptions of the appropriateness of different penalties for various crimes and the effectiveness of rehabilitative measures were analyzed. The data were processed using IBM® SPSS, employing Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney tests, depending on the groups under analysis. The results showed that perceptions vary with the course, year of study, and gender. The results indicate that criminology students, students in advanced years, and men showed more favorable perceptions of severe penalties, although the results were not consistent. This study contributes to the understanding of students' perceptions of criminal justice and its implications for future professional practice.
