Comparações mediterrânicas: Felicidade e infelicidade em Itália e Portugal

| dc.description.abstract | Este estudo foca o conceito de Felicidade/Infelicidade no contexto intercultural. Pediu-se a estudantes universitários Portugueses e Italianos para descreverem o que é para eles a Felicidade ou a Infelicidade. Estudos anteriores como o de Uchida & Kitayama (unpublished) sugerem-nos que os factores culturais que têm impacto na percepção e vivência destes conceitos se situam numa dimensão de self interdependente e self independente (Markus & Kitayama, 1991) que pode ser equiparada à de individualismo-colectivismo (Hofstede, 1986). Assim sendo, culturas orientais e ocidentais parecem diferenciar-se na forma como percebem e vivenciam os conceitos de Felicidade/Infelicidade. A leitura feita a esses dados sugere que dois países como a Itália e Portugal, que partilham uma dimensão de individualismo/colectivismo muito próxima, não deveriam diferir na forma como definem estes conceitos (pelo menos não ao nível das diferenças encontrados por Uchida & Kitayama, unpublished). A análise de conteúdo das respostas dos participantes dos dois países permitiu classificá-las a dois níveis: a) como “sociais” vs “pessoais”, b) “positivas” ou “negativas” vs ”ambíguas”. Como seria de esperar, por se assumir ambas as culturas como tendo níveis semelhantes de individualismo e colectivismo, não foram encontradas diferenças entre as respostas dos estudantes Italianos e Portugueses. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT: This study places the concepts of Happiness and Unhappiness in a transcultural context. Portuguese and Italian university students described what Happiness and Unhappiness was for them. Previous studies like the one of Uchida and Kitayama (unpublished) suggest that the cultural factors that have an impact in the way we live and understand these concepts are placed in an dependent or interdependent dimension of the self (Markus & Kitayama, 1991), which resembles Hofstedes (1986) dimensions of Individualism-Collectivism. In their study, Oriental and Occidental cultures seem to have different ways of understanding and living Happiness/Unhappiness concepts. These data suggest that two countries like Italy and Portugal, whose values in the Individualism-Collectivism dimensions are near one to another, shouldn’t differ in the way these concepts are defined, at least not with the same kind of differences found in Uchida and Kitayama’s (unpublished) study. A content analysis of the participants’ answers of the two countries gave origin to a two level classification: a) “social” vs. “personal”, b) “positive”or “negative” vs. “ambiguos”. As expected, once assuming both cultures as similar in I-C levels, no significant differences were found between Portuguese and Italian answers. | por |
