Abstract(s)
O presente estudo procurou, assim, conhecer as atitudes destes/as profissionais
ABSTRACT: Prison officers take a leadership role on the social rehabilitation process of offenders. It is therefore imperative that they do not adopt negative attitudes towards them that could bias their behavior and compromise the performance of their duties. The present study aimed to explore these professionals' attitudes towards offenders and the extent to which they are influenced by sociodemographic and psychological variables, in the hope that the information gathered could help identify existing gaps in their recruitment and training process. To this end, a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Attitude Scale towards Ofenders (ATO) and the brief version of Basic Empathy Scale (BES-A) were administered to a sample of 109 prison officers from across the country. The results showed that prison officers had, on average, less positive attitudes towards offenders than similar samples from previous studies. Differences were also found in their attitudes in terms of years of service and political stance, as well as a statistically significant correlation between these and the age of the participants. However, contrary to our expectations, neither education nor empathy proved to have a significant influence on attitudes towards offenders. Finally, these results were interpreted according to the literature and possible practical implications, highlighting the importance of introducing a psychosocial component into the initial and ongoing training of these professionals.
