Abstract(s)

The social withdrawal is the term used to explain what can lead to children not to interacting with their peers. The present study aims to extend the knowledge about the social withdrawal problem in terms of the negative consequences linked to internal problems, including the level of self-concept. Intended to compare the self-concept of adolescents, making a distinction between aggressive and withdrawn young and not aggressive and withdrawn young, in order to verify the differences and how they manifest. 2931 adolescents participated in this study (1466 males and 1465 females), students from the 7th, 8th and 9th grade, from schools in the Lisbon region. The instrument used for the assessment of social withdrawal was the Portuguese version of E.C.P. (Extended Class Play). The results indicated that there are no differences between the genders and in function of the school year in relation to social withdrawal and aggression, and that these concepts are also not correlated. Regarding self-concept, there were no differences shown between the withdrawn and non-aggressive groups and withdrawn and aggressive groups, exceptionally differences were found in the social acceptance and athletic ability dimensions.
