Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Parents cognitions and behaviors significantly contribute to children's social, emotional and cognitive development. But how do these cognitions previously relate to a mother’s attachment to her child? Beliefs about parenting are the generating forces to parental practices and, in the say manner, self-efficacy seems to help parents in the adoption of best or worst practices. Maternal self-efficacy is defined as a mother’s beliefs or judgements about her own ability to perform a specific set of tasks that relate to a baby’s care and, it is postulated that it contributes to mother-infant attachment. The current study’s main objective was to explore the relation between beliefs about parenting and parental self-efficacy with the intensity of post-natal maternal attachment. The sample consists of 87 mothers of babies up to 18 months of age. The data was collected online, using Google Forms. The results suggest that the self-efficacy dimensions contribute to more attachment quality. However, they reveal that there is no significant relation between the dimensions of beliefs about parenting and attachment. It concludes that mothers’ feelings about her competence and satisfaction with her role positively contribute to a more intense sense of attachment with their babies.
