Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: One of the biggest indirect consequences of changes in the environment is related to the anxiety that people feel. Eco-anxiety has been linked to higher levels of proenvironmental behaviors, but also to possible eco-paralysis. In this sense, the main goal of this study was to evaluate how eco-anxiety relates to pro-environmental behaviors and to test whether the efficacy, collective (in study 1; n = 103) and individual (in study 2; n = 105), moderates this relationship, and could therefore, in the future, be the basis of social-clinical interventions to help with eco-paralysis. In general, eco-anxiety is positively correlated with pro-environmental behaviors, although inconsistently when we analyze the specific factos of eco-anxiety and the type of pro-environmental behavior. We also have evidence that appears to support a quadratic relationship between both variables, although with little variability in the higher spectrum of the eco-anxiety. This limitation seems to be able to equally explain the lack of moderation of both collective efficacy and self-efficacy. It is suggested that new studies be carried out with a greater number of participants who present higher levels of eco-anxiety and that investment be made in the development of instruments more adapted to the context, which can better map the specific context of the climate crisis in Portugal.
