Abstract(s)
Background: In recent years, research has been carried out to better understand the specific risk factors and the psychosocial and psychological buffer factors of the police and military profession. In Portugal, members of the security forces and the armed forces experience situations of high risk for physical and mental health and also due to the fact that they carry a weapon and are perceived as authority figures. Objective: To characterize sociodemographically and to know the psychological adjustment of the members of the Portuguese Security and Armed Forces, pointing out resources and vulnerabilities in terms of social support, psychopathology and job satisfaction variables. Method: For this correlational design study, was used a sample of 325 participants. Were aplied the Social Support Satisfaction Scale (ESSS), the Job Satisfaction Scale (JDI), and the Psychopathology Scale (BSI). Results: There was a strong positive correlation between social support and job satisfaction, a strong negative correlation between psychopathology and the other two variables. From the linear regression of the four dimensions of the ESSS to explain the variance of psychopathology, a statistically significant model resulted, where lower levels of intimacy and social activities contributed significantly to higher levels of psychopathology. Conclusions: The present study supports the importance of social support and psychological intervention in the prevention of psychopathological symptoms in members of the Portuguese Security and Armed Forces.
