A satisfação, o desejo e a excitação
Smartphones are part of a daily life, playing a special role in our connection with others in romantic relationships’ context. Studies have focused on the relation between these devices and romantic relationships, however, there is a gap in the literature regarding individuals' sexual life and smartphone use. This research intends to study the relationship between the duration of smartphone use, the duration of smartphone use alone with the partner, and problematic internet use, on the one hand, and satisfaction, arousal, and desire in the last sexual relation, on the other. The sample consists of 200 participants, of which 162 were female and 38 were male. Smartphone usage was measured by information about how much time was spent with the smartphone on the day of the last sexual encounter and how much time was spent with the smartphone, when alone with the partner on the same day. Sexual satisfaction, desire, and arousal were measured with questions about how much sexual satisfaction, desire, and arousal were felt in the last sexual relation, respectively. Internet addiction was measured through the IAT (Internet Addiction Test) scale, adapted for the Portuguese population. For both sexes, greater problematic Internet use was associated with lower sexual satisfaction. In the total sample, greater duration of smartphone correlated with lesser sexual satisfaction. Lesser sexual satisfaction may be related to poorer communication in the relationship, resulting from the problematic internet use and potentiated by the smartphone.
