Abstract(s)
The aging of the population is pointed out as one of the crucial challenges of the 21st century due to changing the demographic curve. Institutionalization arises as a response to this population having several consequences for the individual. To understand this social reality, we have to deepen the knowledge about these consequences. This study aims to contribute to this objective by providing empirical evidence on the impact that institutionalization has on the perception of Dignity and Well-being of the elderly. With this purpose we interviewed elderly people with different social responses, institutionalized at a Nursing Home (79) and not institutionalized, at a Day Center (21) and with Home Support Services (36) about their perception of dignity and welfare. The results indicate that the perception of Dignity is lower in institutionalized participants (NH) and that they have subjective welfare levels far lower than those of non-institutionalized participants (DC). Being the Perception of Internal and External Dignity positively related to the Subjective Welfare, this arises as an important mediator of the impact that the social/institutionalization response exerts on the experience of wellbeing of the elderly.
