This study stems from a research project conducted during a curricular internship in a Year 4 classroom within a private educational institution aligned with the Movimento da Escola Moderna (Modern School Movement – MEM). The research sought to explore how social interactions, supported through teacher mediation, contribute to children's socioemotional regulation. Specifically, it addressed: 1) the contribution of peer interactions within collective learning contexts to socioemotional regulation; 2) the teacher’s role in mediating and guiding such interactions to foster reflection and emotional management; and 3) the pedagogical intentionalities underpinning the creation of collective discussions on socioemotional themes. Employing a qualitative design, the study drew upon participant observation, reflective field notes, and an interview with the cooperating teacher. Findings indicate that teacher mediation, grounded in dialogic communication, fosters self-regulation, active listening, and emotional awareness. Dialogue emerged as both a means of socioemotional regulation and a structuring principle of group dynamics, enhancing cooperative learning and promoting more balanced peer relationships. The research underscores the importance of intentional and reflective pedagogical practice, in which the teacher serves as a mediator and facilitator of both personal and collective growth. It reaffirms the centrality of dialogue as a cornerstone of children’s holistic and socioemotional development.
