Abstract(s)
Objective. The dropout in psychotherapy might limit the impact of it. Therapist characteristics and what happens during the therapy may also explain why the dropout occurs. The present study compared dropout clients and completers, analyzing the current psychopathological symptoms and the satisfaction with last psychotherapy. There were explored as well, the therapist characteristics (e.g., facilitators and inhibitors of change), and the helpful and hindering events during psychotherapy. Method. 73 ex-clients participated in the study, with 29 dropouts and 44 completers. Reported satisfaction and symptom levels were compared between groups. Therapist characteristics and significant events were analyzed through content analysis from clients’ answers. Results. There are no differences in satisfaction and symptomatology between dropout clients and completers. In general, the therapists were favorably precepted, and the significant events related positive experiences. It has been observed a highest level of satisfaction in ex-clients who didn´t mention inhibitory therapist characteristics from the ones perceived inhibition. Discussion. The results emphasize that dropout not always means an negative happening. Seems that there isn´t association with the significant events described and the two ex-clients’ groups. The therapists’ evaluation is relevant, when focused on the inhibitor characteristics of the process.
