Abstract(s)
vítima e interpretação do crime cometido.
ABSTRACT: In the last decade, studies have been conducted to understand the impact of a mental illness (MI) label on individuals involved in trial proceedings (e.g., defendant, victim, witness) on the perceptions of mock jurors. In the present study, participants (N = 127) were instructed to formulate judgments, based on vignettes describing a sexual assault case, specifically assessing a witness with borderline personality disorder (BPD) regarding her competence, reliability and credibility, as well as their perceptions of the defendant’s degree of guilt, the victim’s degree of consent and the validity of her complaint, and their interpretation of the crime committed. Participants also completed a scale of attitudes towards people with mental illness (APWMI) and a questionnaire on their familiarity with MI. The results showed no influence of the BPD label on the aforementioned variables. These findings suggest that the participants in this study hold few stigmatizing attitudes towards individuals with MI; however, these results may not be representative of the general population, highlighting the need for further research on this topic.
