Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Given the need to implement alternative therapies for those who do not respond to the available treatments, it is essential to understand how mental health professionals view and perceive psychedelic-assisted therapy. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the attitudes and clinical practices of a sample of psychotherapists (n=118) and relate them to certain personality traits, such as “openness to experience” and “conscientiousness”. The results showed that, on average, attitudes were neutral, but more positive on one variable in relation to the legitimacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy research and careers. Positive correlations were found between attitudes and “openness to experience”, between clinical practices and “openness to experience”, and clinical practices and “conscientiousness”. In addition, psychotherapists with up to five years' experience in the field were more likely to be able to talk comfortably about the use of psychedelics. Participants who reported a history of personal therapeutic use of these substances showed more positive attitudes compared to the group who reported no history, and psychotherapists who showed a preference for the transpersonal approach showed a clear tendency towards more positive attitudes. These results provide a benchmark for how psychotherapists perceive psychedelic-assisted therapy, as well as providing pertinent information for psychotherapy societies that provide training to future mental health professionals.
