Abstract(s)

Numa altura em que a família se encontra a sofrer grandes alterações, quer em termos da sua estrutura quer em termos da sua concepção, parece constituir matéria importante de estudo, a maneira como os jovens a concebem. Assim, vai-se apresentar, neste artigo, os valores familiares defendidos pelos estudantes finalistas, em 1995/1996, da Universidade do Algarve. O instrumento de pesquisa utilizado foi um questionário constituído por 46 perguntas relativas aos valores dominantes na cultura ocidental - valores relacionados com a família, trabalho, justiça, igualdade, liberdade, paz, nacionalidade, etc. (Figueiredo, 1988). Os resultados obtidos demonstram que a família assume um lugar preponderante na vida destes jovens e que estes defendem os novos valores da família. Esta é entendida por estes jovens como uma espaço de realização pessoal, que promove o crescimento, a autonomia, o bem-estar interior. Para além disso, o casamento surge dissociado da procriação e educação dos filhos e já não coincide com o início do relacionamento sexual. Por último, os cônjuges surgem com deveres e direitos idênticos.

ABSTRACT: It is generally accepted that the family is going through important structural and conceptual changes. But how do the young people perceive the family? This seems to be an important question that should be answered. As such, one is going to present the family values sustained by the students from the University of Algarve. A questionnaire with 46 questions concerning the dominating values in western society was used (Figueiredo, 1988). The results show that these students experience the family as a very important issue in their lives and that they support the new family values. The family is seen as a tool to promote self-fulfillment. Besides, marriage and procriation are dissociated from each other and sex life does not begin with marriage. Finally, both husband and wife, have identical rights and duties.
