Abstract(s)
This research aimed to understand the dynamics of co-parenting in heteroparental families in Portugal (Study 1) and in homoparental families in Brazil (Study 2), with children aged between 4 and 18 years old, according to Feinberg's model of internal structure and ecological context of co-parenting. A qualitative analysis through the thematic analysis method was used with a total of nine interviews: four from heteroparental families in Portugal (Study 1) and five from homoparental families (three families consisting of two mothers and two families consisting of two fathers) in Brazil (Study 2). Three individual and one couple interview were conducted out in Study 1, and four couple and one individual interview in Study 2. It was observed that, at the beginning of the parenthood project, there is a previous and/or simultaneous attempt of biological parenthood versus adoptive parenthood in Study 1, while in Study 2, although thoughtful, it is the adoptive parenthood that is chosen. In the dynamics of co-parenting, in study 1, the participants seemed to show less co-parental support, a less satisfactory division in parenting practices (with a greater burden for heterosexual mothers) and a joint family management with some conflicts (hostility), contrary to study 2. The existence of disagreements and the way of resolving them seemed to be similar in both studies. It was possible to observe particularities in homoparental families such as the intersection of sexual and parental identity, and the positive balance of the confrontation between pre-adoption expectations and the experience of adoptive parenthood
