Abstract(s)
Introduction: This study intends to explore the relationship between self-harm behaviours (SHB) and identity, while introducting a new approach to study the identity by exploring the emotional valence and importance associated with the subjects narratives and self-concept domains. Method: An online protocol consisting on the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Task âI Wasâ, âI Amâ and âI Will Beâ and the portuguese version of the Inventory of Self-harm behaviours (ICAL) was answered by 64 adolescents from both genders, aged between 18 and 21 years (M = 19.72; SD = 1,133), divided into two natural groups, according to the presence or absence of a history of SBH. Results: The results revealed pathological narratives in adolescents with SHB, as well as, lower self-concept assessments in adolescents with SHB when compared to the subjects without SHB. Conclusion: The results of this study underline the important role of identity for a better understanding of CAL.
