Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The present study aims to investigate the psychological impact of alcohol dependence on family members and close associates, exploring the differences in codependency, emotional expression and emotional overload between two specific groups. The first group is made up of family members who live daily with someone who suffers from alcohol dependence, while the second group includes people who, although they have a family member or acquaintance with a history of dependence, do not maintain close or continuous contact with that person. In this second group, participants only discuss information about the closest family memberthey have. The research aims to assess not only the differences in the intensity of the psychological effects, but also the specific types of challenges faced in each group. The impact on personal, social and professional life will be analyzed, as well as demographic factors such as the age of the participant and the age of the dependent person, analyzing how these variables influence both emotional responses and the perception of the problem. The instruments used were the Portuguese version of the Co-Dependency Composite Scale (CCS), the Scale for assessing the physical, emotional and social impact of the informal caregiver role (QASCI) and the Portuguese version of the Expressed Emotionality Scale (EEE). The results of this research suggest that family members and people close to alcohol dependents experience considerably higher levels of emotional burden and negative impact on their personal and social lives, compared to relatives who do not have direct contact with the dependents. However, no significant differences were noted in the rates of co-dependency and emotional expression between the groups, indicating that these emotional dynamics can be found in various contexts of family care, not only in situations of alcohol dependence.
