A sociedade tende a atribuir Ă s mulheres a maior responsabilidade pela gravidez e
A mudança
ABSTRACT: Traditionally, societies attribute the major responsibility of pregnancy and rising of healthy children, including breastfeeding, to women. However during the last years the need to also focus on men as actors in the whole reproductive process has been emphasized, still little is known on the decision-making process, and how men and women experience breastfeeding in the context of social gender relations. It was objective of this study describe the experiences, feelings and perceptions of couples on breastfeeding of their first-child, their perspectives about motherhood and fatherhood, and to analyze the gender relations involved in these processes. An explorative, transversal and qualitative study was carried out and purposeful sampling conducted according to predetermined criteria were selected through the âsnowballâ. Individual interviews were carried to 12 persons, 6 couples. Specific, semi-structured guidelines were used to interview women and men. The interviews were analyzed with qualitative technique. The most important conclusions were that men are inclined to perceive themselves as coadjuvants in the breasfeeding. This perspective is determined in the context of social gender relations, which give raise their exclusion of this process since a logical power that also determines an unequal distribution of men and women responsibilities and rights. In order to change this situation, an instrument in gender socialization is required since childhood.
