Scale (Price et al., 1999) e Severity of Violence Against Women Scale (Marshall, 1992).
masculina.
Starting from the premise that understanding men’s beliefs, perceptions, and experiences is essential for preventing intimate partner violence (IPV) against women, the present study aimed to analyze how men’s attitudes and experiences relate to the legitimization and prevalence of different forms of violence. It also sought to explore the influence of sociodemographic variables - namely age and education - on how men interpret and experience situations of IPV. This is a quantitative, exploratory study conducted through an online questionnaire composed of the Attitudes Toward Dating Violence Scale (Price et al., 1999) and the Severity of Violence Against Women Scale (Marshall, 1992). A total of 108 Portuguese men participated, aged between 20 and 69 years. The results showed greater legitimization of psychological violence compared to physical and sexual forms, as well as a predominance of controlling behaviors in the experiences reported. It was observed that older participants tended to display greater tolerance toward psychological violence and controlling behaviors, suggesting the persistence of traditional gender beliefs and norms associated with male domination. These findings highlight the relevance of preventive interventions focused on reflecting upon masculinity and power dynamics within intimate relationships. Promoting critical and equitable relational education may help deconstruct patriarchal beliefs and reduce the legitimization of coercive behaviors, reinforcing social commitment to equality and the prevention of violence.
