Abstract(s)
The attitudes of prisoners arrested for non-sexual crimes towards individuals who have committed sexual offences have a major impact on the lives of these offenders within the prison environment. The present study aims to explore what these attitudes are, and verify if they reveal differences taking into account some sociodemographic variables such as gender, age, marital status, parental situation and the dimensions of the subjects' personalities. For this study, a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Scale of Attitudes Toward Sex Offenders and the NEO Five-Factor inventory, was applied to a sample of 222 offenders of non-sexual crimes. The results revealed that attitudes towards sexual offenders are trending negative and there is a statistically significant correlation between the dimension of openness to experience and attitudes. These results highlight the need to explore in more detail the consequences of these attitudes towards sexual offenders so that the prison environment can perform the rehabilitative function to which it has proposed.
