ABSTRACT: The indicators regarding the incidence of sexual violence in Portugal show a clear upward movement. Given that this type of violence involves the appropriation of women’s bodies and the violation of their most basic rights, it is expected that experiences of sexual violence have the ability to impact the various domains of women’s lives and may significantly have a negative influence the way they function, as well as their quality of life. The present study aimed to analyse the impact of sexual violence on the sexual function and mental health of portuguese women. A total of 204 portuguese women, aged between 18 and 56 years old, participated in this study. Data were collected using the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire, the Female Sexual Function Index and the Brief Symptom Inventory. The results evidenced and absence of negative impact on female sexual functioning. However, the results show that this type of violence can impact mental health, with a higher presence of psychopathological symptoms such as obsessions-compulsions, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, paranoid ideation and even psychoticism, found in women victims of sexual violence.
