Ser mãe é um dom, ser pai é uma dádiva: Estudo exploratório sobre as vivências paternas durante a amamentação

Na maioria das culturas, os cuidados com o bebé são quase da responsabilidade, exclusiva, da
mulher, isto em parte por causa da amamentação, todavia, é reconhecida a importância da
presença dos pais na divisão de tarefas e responsabilidade, nos cuidados com a criança desde
as primeiras semanas de vida. O objectivo desta investigação é compreender no contexto
familiar, sobre a óptica do pai, o seu papel durante o aleitamento materno e o modo como
este é representado. Participaram no nosso estudo doze homens residentes no Distrito de
Setúbal. Para análise dos resultados, utilizámos uma metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa, a
análise de conteúdo. As principais conclusões apontam para uma mudança do papel do pai
tradicional que delegava as necessidades do bebé à mãe, para um “novo pai” que defende os
seus direitos, nomeadamente a sua participação mais efectiva na vida privada da família. O
estudo permitiu identificar uma evolução das atitudes masculinas, que se revertem em
mudanças na concepção e no exercício de ser pai. O aumento da participação do pai desde o
pré-natal tem uma influência directa na decisão de amamentar, pelo qual podemos dizer que o
sucesso do aleitamento materno passa por uma decisão a dois.
ABSTRACT: In most cultures, the main care and worries with the baby are mother's responsibility, due to the fact that maternity tasks are associated with breast feeding. However, it was recognized that it is important that both mother and father should share responsibilities and tasks with the child since the first weeks of life. The main aim of this research is to understand father's role in family context during breastfeeding process and how it is represented, 12 men have participated in this research, all of them living in Setubal. To analyse the results has been used a methodology of qualitative research, named content analysis. The main conclusions show a change in traditional father's role, that use to delegate the baby need satisfaction on the mother. This study also reveals an evolution in men attitude that can be translated in changes in the concept and exercise of father main tasks. It is clear that the increase of father’s involvement since pregnancy is directly related with bread feeding decision, so we can conclude that the success of breast feeding depends on the decision taken by the couple.
